When advertising a rebate, the law specifies that retailers who advertise the net price (after-rebate price) of an item should credit the consumer the amount of the rebate at the time of purchase. 

As an option, retailers are allowed to advertise the full price for items and state that a mail-in rebate is available to the consumer.
